The Street Fighter 2 movie has been rereleased in an uncensored version. As the story goes the world class female Kung Fu fighter Chun Li is a Chinese Interpol agent. She is teamed up with some American and Japanese fighter / agents to track down the arch criminal in the series called Bison, who is the head of the Shadowlaw crime organization.
The general mediocrity of the movie is temporarily broken by a ten second scene. Suddenly Chun Li’s aerodynamic cone shaped bare breasts are visible as she is revealed in a superfluous shower scene. Unfortunately this the only highlight in the flick.
The animation is blocky and the timing in it is off. It doesn’t flow like an anime and the fight scenes seem forced and gratuitous. It looks more like a Marvel comic than anime. The colors are uniformly dull and average. There are no special effects or lighting features.
As the thin plot plays out we are shown flash backs to the history between the pair of martial artists who trained as brothers. They have now taken different paths in life. Ken with a long flowing Leonine mane of hair looks pretty hot as the flashy street fighting actor. Ryu is a wanderer that seems to be on an extended walk about. The movie does not explain where he is wandering to or why.
Bison decides to kidnap Ken and brain wash him. He is shown nude in a torture scene but his junk is blurred. so much for uncensored. The double standard is obvious since Chun Li was shown completely nude including the fur patch.
We are treated to some gay subtext as the various flash backs give us more insight into the relationship between the two young men. Ryu saves Ken’s life. Ken takes the red ribbon from his long hair to bind a bleeding wound above Ryu’s eye. Ryu never takes off the red headband and is still wearing it presumably several years later when this story line takes place.
Eventually the brainwashed Ken and Ryu start to fight. The blows jog Ken’s memory and the love affair is back on. The duo team up and give Bison a good thrashing.
The movie is slow and dull despite the attempts to make it exciting and cool. The American guy seems to charge around in his Mustang and tries to protect Chun Li but like a typical guy he is always arriving too late.
At the end when a woman comes by to pick up Ken in a red convertible, Ken offers Ryu a ride. Predictably, he says “I’d rather walk” (“than get in the car with that female that took you away from me.”)
If you are a collector then you might want this uncensored version. Otherwise it’s a rent not a buy. I give it a ho hum 5 out of 10.
