As I work on my archives and dig through all my old blogs today I am struck nostalgic by something in the scent of the fall air and the weather here in southern New England. I remember my Mom and my Grandmother. Both of those ladies went to the Other Side long, long ago. It is hard even still to get my mind around it that they are both nothing more than my memories. People die and their physical presence vanishes in the true mystery that is human nature.
I would like my Mom to know how much more I appreciate the things that she attempted to teach me, the older I get. If only we could all learn from the benefit of experience. How I wish young women I know would isten to advice when I’ve given it. Especially my nieces and their daughters. Growing up in the 1960’s and ‘70 was no easy task. I’m grateful just to still be here.
Mom tried to teach me things that are lessons still good today, about men. About race and class. She was an original liberal, way ahead of her time. She believed that one should “Live and let live.” “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” and my favorite “Truth is stranger than fiction.” Those were her mottos. She believed that we should give people a chance, let them tell their story and not judge any one even though she was raised in a very victorian era when those ideals were unconventional in the 1920’s and 30’s.
I try to pass down or pay it forward with her wisdom. She was independent, and attempted to excell at things that guys did like house construction, running a store, and even having a hobby of archery. Yes, a girl gamer in her time. The ladies in my family gathered weekly at each others homes to play cards too. My Mom always had Queens in her hand. The few times that we went to a casino our psychic charm with cards was a little to much. To this day I can look at a Keno machine and say the numbers just before they appear on the screen. but, if I place a bet I get nothing or they are the numbers for the next round.
But I digress. today I want to pass down some of my own wisdom ladies.
“Think for yourself.” “Watch your back.” Speak up. Cover your own ass. There is nothing a woman cannot do if she puts her mind to it. And most important of all don’t let men, don’t let anyone tell you what you can’t do.”
