Maybe because I grew up watching the original cast of the Not Ready for Prime Time Players way after bedtime on a black and white TV. Or it could have been the episodes of Monty Python and the Doctor Demento show on the radio. Or George Carlin. Having icons of comedy like that woven into the fabric of my childhood, I would have no choice but to have an offbeat sense of humor…
I don’t know what sort of schadenfreude it is that makes me laugh when I see men hurting themselves on viral videos. You know the ones where they drive you name it, right into your choice of obstacles. Why is it that I enjoy emptying a virtual shotgun into zombies? Or seeing the rag doll physics of my avatar in Flat Out 2 as she slams face down into the pavement. I find those things amusing. Humor must be viseral.
These things make me laugh. That’s why I support more M rated and AO gaming. It’s time for the console makers and the stores to let designers have the creativity to make more adult content. From a marketing standpoint they are all about “casual games” right now because of the numbers. For several years I’ve said that women gamers are playing PC games all the time. Eventually the stats came out that way over and over. So as baby boomers age, I was born in the last baby boomer cut off year ’61, we have more and more time on our hands.
We’re being given censored kiddie crap for the most part. Even the M rated games are tame, but fun too. I have given good reviews to games like Bully, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Evil Dead and Aqua Teen Hunger Force Zombie Ninja Pro-Am. I should get around to a review of Leisure Suit Larry also.
Sure nobody wants death and violence around their kids, but I don’t have kids. Female boomers have empty nests. I think if Xbox 360 at the very least wants to last beyond Halo3 they should consider just who they can create games for that they are not serving.
When I was a kid I went to see Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult and Metalica. What am I expected to do now read romance novels and knit? I don’t think so.
