George Carlin might not have had much to do with video games. What I had to say about the connection for me was best put when I wrote about Grown Up Games. But he influenced me as a writer perhaps more than anyone else. He was a guiding force. He invented the kind of comedy that was a satire and social commentary. He was a brilliant student and teacher of the english language.
He said that he didn’t feel like he was part of the human race, and that he was floating above the earth on an oort cloud throwing down lightening bolts. I am angry that George Carlin left us before the election this fall. I wanted to see him do one more HBO special, appear on a few more talk shows. I wanted to see him embarrassing one more idiot one third his age, by stealing the spotlight. He could be both shocking and include everyone in the joke at the same time. I always admired the way that he kept his pony tail and still looked so hip even at 71.
I will miss his wit and wise words as we go into an uncertain future when few can be as succinct as he was. Who will pick up the slack? Jon Stewart? Dennis Leary? His was a voice that was much needed by the generation that had him and will be even more needed in the coming days. I can only hope that his passing will spread his molecules around to infuse a new generation of comedic thinkers who will push open what ever new bars are put on free speech in our times.
