setsuka.jpgSay what you will about the first look at the obvious assets of the female avatars in the recently released fighter game Soul Calibur 4. Yet, here we have heroines for everybody. Ivy’s orbiting torpedos may defy gravity, and strain the purple string of a cup size that has got to be beyond double D. Her behind has also been substantially increased in size as well. She looks ridiculous. And ridiculously sexualized female characters suit the drooling 15 year old male set.

But it goes beyond that. There is something for everyone who wants to play as a female character. Whether you are the type of surra.jpgfeminist that thinks it’s empowering to flaunt it if you got it. Or if you are the type of feminist that thinks it’s empowering to show your stuff only in private, you will be satisfied.

If for example Ivy was your favorite character, but you don’t like the purple thong arrangement you can change it. If you aren’t comfortable with the huge knockers on the characters, then you can adjust them for muscularity and give them more athletic chests. With a very good character creation system you can take all the things that you do like about your favorite characters and redesign them to suit your tastes. You can clothe the females or not. You have options. From silk ivy.jpgkimono’s and cotton gii for fighting to several kinds of armor and even fishnet stockings and accouterments from the world of anime. The female avatars run the gamut from full armor, to chain mail, to goddess and warrior princess inspired. You can even choose the underwear.

I happily customized an Ame Warashi character from xxxHolic with Setsuka’s umbrella and Amy’s outfits. I made a Yukko - san with Taki’s magickal powers, in a black princess dress and the big hat with skulls on it. I put together a Rangiku from Bleach using the Chinese sword for her zanpakto. It was easy to fashion a shinigami kimono for her to wear as well.amy.jpg

In the excellent character customization engine, there are finally descent shoes for the female characters. Developers might be surprised at what female gamers appreciate, but that is one detail that has been lacking in almost every game. You can pick stockings and socks, but more importantly the matching shoes are rendered in detail and they are proportional. Except for certain boots which are a bit larger than life.

The game delivers on the female characters other more important assets as well. You can customize for special attacks and weapons. The more you play it andcassandra.jpg study it, the more hardcore it gets. It’s vast, it’s endless and it’s way too much fun. I’ve done almost nothing else but play it for two weeks and I still feel like I am only touching on the tips of the icebergs in this article.

The game doesn’t stop at just presenting the huge boobs though. There is an armor removal system. If you smack the opponent just right when their health bar lights up red, you can knock the clothes right off them. Some of them end up in a bikini when they get beat. All that bouncing is distracting and actually so over the top that it gets to be funny.

The double standard does exist. When are we going to see schezerade.jpgjock-less male characters with over sized hard - ons wiggling around under a leotard as they jump around? It sounds obscene to think about it. But, I think that would be very funny too. Why is it that Ivy can have those mobilized missiles but Kilik doesn’t have a boner sticking out of his pants?

Even though Soul Calibur 4 is a great fighter game that is well rounded in all other areas it still hammers home the same point. It does prove that those over sexualized female avatars are probably here to stay. The game is not without controversy about the way the female characters are handled.

Certainly someone was listening because Soul Calibur 4 has more fighting female characters possibly than any other game. If you include the female opponents that are generated by the games AI in single player mode, you’ve got a big list of female characters there. Then there are the elaborate customization possibilities. Does having the opportunity to customize make up for the sexual marketing campaign that floats on top of Ivy’s aureola - less breasts. (If she were real and had breasts that big, they would be exposed under the string top.) It’s up to each individual women gamer to decide how she feels about it. But if powerful fighting females is what you need to get you through the night after a hard day’s work then Soul Calibur is a buy for you for sure.

Occasionally I noticed that characters would get bogged down by too many commands. Then they face the wrong direction, executing moves into thin air. It’s just one slight bug.

The graphics are outstanding. The game-play is everything it should be. It works better than Virtua Fighter 5 did and there are tons more female characters. No matter which side of the boob issue you support, it’s still an undeniably great fighter. On the whole it gets 9 happy jiggles out of 10.
