Skate 2 for PS3 Review

skate2-1Skate 2 gave me an immediate turn off. Once again the character customization for the female character was weak. Then I had so much trouble with the camera that it made it impossible to play. There was no peripheral vision. Looking around caused the character to go into an endless spin and get stuck spinning in a wall. The game is harder than the first one. There is a steep learning curve. Its all to be discovered by feel.

The atmosphere begins in a psuedo So-Cal squalor. Then as you advance the background has more concrete, marble and glass. This depicts a New California that was taken over by the fictional Mongocorp. You’ll have to contend with an army of security goons.

They’ve done what they can to make skaters feel unwelcome in their public areas. Slabs of stone in the business district are “capped.” You’ll need a crowbar to pry those stoppers up as one of the minor tasks you are required to do. Another illicit pass-time in New San Vanelona is to find and drain various swimming pools and fountains to skateboard in.

The game has a strange intense vibe to it. There is tension between the skaters and the Mongocorp but it isn’t a fleshed out conflict. the tasks in the game are limited. It does give career opportunities to the ambitious, but you’d have to be a real fan of this type of game to get into it.

Skate 2 isn’t as accessible as the first game. It seems somewhat unfocused about where it fits in the story line. The skateboarding itself is ok, and does about half of what it should do well and doesn’t look so good doing it. Skate 2 gets 4 out of 10.
