Bionic Commando PS3 Review

bionic_commandoThis is a well made fun game that should not be overlooked. He’s got a decent look and hair do for a guy. It would have gotten a higher score if there was character customization or or an option to play as various characters in the story including a playable female avatar. It may take lots of extra development time, but to make a good game complete there should be more than one character to play as. For replayability sake alone. Don’t tell me it’s too hard to do. Mercenaries and Mercenaries 2 are good examples of how the female character could have improved this game. Maybe the developers are too young to remember The Bionic Woman. 1976, or too busy to watch in 2007. At least it is humble though. The cutscenes aren’t too long and there aren’t too many of them. The swinging from one precarious perch after another is stunning and its the main strength of this game. If you liked Assasin’s Creed and the other par couer games the this one might get you excited. Bionic Commando is typical of a game that has a gaget in it and that gets over used. You have a left hand which is a bionic mechanism, it has very limited capabilities and powers though. The grapple claw works the best of any graple hook type instrument in a game I’ve played yet and it is more like a winch than a weapon. Too bad it didn’t pack a missle or two once in a while. The fighting moves with it aren’t spectacular at all either.

There are some details that I would have liked better, such as a more visible health system. Instead you die with little notice, and its Game Over. You respawn but curiously not at the most recent Way Point that you have reached. Get killed enough and it sends you back to the beginning. What about some sort of electromagnetic shields while we are at it?

There are a few items scattered around to find to meet challenges. The big 8 bit cartoonish items don’t fit in with the style of the game and should have been more realistic. Finding an actual CD or a laptop in the rubble of the nuked out city would have made it more interesting and creepier. Power – ups that add more functionality to your arm would have been good too. Oh wait that’s Bioshock, and it might be fair to make a comparison because of the biomechanical arm.
The graphics are good. The city is modern and the smashed up pavement and buldings are very realistic. The different settings that he goes through look crisp..

Eventually you get very welcome grenades, rocket launchers, shotgun, machine gun and a sniper rifle. But it seems like forever getting them.

A major problem is that not everything in the game is grabbable. There are predetermined directions for you to go in to complete the mission. It’s ridiculous and frustrating when you are trying to move from point A to point B and one concrete area that you are hanging from is clickable with the grapple but the area next to it is not. A frequent quick means of death is to fall with no handholds in sight, into a radiation ridden area below where he instantly gets killed. Oh and metalically enhanced guys can’t swim.

On the whole it is alot of fun to mess around with this swinging shooting character. It gets repetitive really fast and you might not finish it, so try a rental first. I give Bionic Commando 7 red dreads out of 10.
