Fuel PS3 Review

fuelIf you wish that you could take a dune buggy ride out on Race Point without worrying about beach erosion or insurance liabilities, or if you just like to go tearing around on bikes, ATV’s and several other kinds of noisy extreme vehicles you will love Fuel. This is a quintessential driving game that is made for fun. It isn’t sophisticated, it doesn’t have shiny licensed cars. It is gritty and dirty, you drive around a map of dense backwoods trails, logging roads, and over old concrete. The scenery is very well rendered, the woodsy atmosphere could be the Connecticut hills or up in the the White Mountains. There are lake shore scenes that will warm you up when you are stuck indoors when all it will do is rain this summer.

Too bad there isn’t a female avatar. Never mind the feminist aspects, we all know it is sexist that there women are not included as female avatars in 90% of video games. This game would really benefit from some hot looking female drivers to go with the four wheel drive. Designers are always putting breast physics in games where it wouldn’t actually be possible for breasts to loose gravity. But take it from me, four wheel driving is one case where everything gets air. Yet another missed opportunity, even if for the wrong reasons.

Another complaint is that the character seems to be stuck in the car. Why can’t he get up and get out of the car  and drink a bottle of wine or smoke a blunt? It’s beautiful country out there, it seems natural that he’d want to do something at those vista points besides wait in the car for you to go get a ham sandwich.

This time the word vast can be used honestly to describe the terrain in Fuel. There are of course other features and races which you need to unlock. Points that you make by winning in career mode or the others will lead to more of the maps being opened. You choose to play either novice, expert or legend levels, you can earn between 1 and 3 stars depending on which one you win.

As well as earning stars from Career races, you also will get some fuel after each race you win. Fuel is this game’s currency. You can spend it on the vehicles, such as the bikes, ATVs, muscle cars, dune buggies or trucks and even hovercrafts.  There are many different models and variations on them.  You are given stats for each one so you know what suits the driving style you have. Weather you just drive out full force in one direction regardless of what is under the tires, or if you require a smoother ride because you are purely after speed.

There are pick ups and challenges that are spread around that you can get to just by exploring which is a big part of the enjoyment in this game. There is reportedly 5,560 square miles of terrain. You can pull up to the ‘vista points’ to check out views. You can enjoy your game breaks with one of those up on the screen, and then resume playing. It keeps the mood of outdoors indoors going. The music was nothing special. It was repetitive and can easily be worked around.

It may be best enjoyed either in a self challenge or online multi-player. There’s up to 2-16 player online multi-player and 2-4 player player online co-op.

This game doesn’t have many faults, and if it had more of a feminine touch here or there it could have gotten an even higher score. I give Fuel an endlessly looping and staying inside the box, figure eight out of ten.
