This is the best iteration of Dungeons and Dragons Online that I’ve played. With too many improvements to name, what is important to know is that this is more than an expansion, it’s more like a new game based on all the old source material. DDO Ebberon Unlimited Free to Play will be released August 6. I’ve been playing the Beta on a Press VIP account that they gave me and I’ve been enjoying the hell out of it. There have been many big improvements since the original release of DDO Stormreach two years ago. For a Beta it seems very accomplished and polished all ready. First of all is the speed and flexibility. The characters move much faster than ever. The jumping and climbing in DDO seems faster than in other MMO’s, even in Turbine’s other huge MMO LOTRO. Not only is there plenty of solo-able content but new tweaks have been added into character creation so that it tells you right up front which character types are best or worst for soloing. If you choose a magic user for instance it will say Solo is Very Good, Good, or Expert only. That way there isn’t a big disappointments later on. Dungeons and Dragons has such a long rich history and so many books out there, that the new Free to Play version is certain to catch the eye of the many people that have enjoyed the books over the years. DDO still is a game that can be difficult, and there are still very deep and complex aspects to it. Although this time the game has now been made more welcoming for Casual gamers.
The starting mission has been changed up, but the locations are very similar to Stormreach. In fact you will play right through Stormreach and some old territories that you might recognize if you’ve played the game before.
With the Free to Play concept there is the new DDO Store where you can accumulate or buy points to use in the game. One of the opportunities is the availability of henchman or hirelings to use in your party so if you don’t have a lot of extra time to spend you can get right to the game. Practically every complaint I ever had has been addressed and optimized. They have added many things to make the game easier to play into the store. It used to be very difficult to keep a soloing character going, even with the Rest statues to turn to for healing in the dungeons. You can get a healing Monk, or purchase health, magic and additional buffs like XP.
What I like so far from the DDO store, and so did lots of other people, is the chance to play as a Drow. I’ve been interested in Drow since I read Daughter of the Drow by Elaine Cunningham. My Drow female was a far superior character over the elves and humans that I have played in the past. She can weild dual swords and she is proficient with the longest weapon list that I’ve ever seen in the game including exotic weapons. The dull muted hair colors may be a thing of the past too, because you can purchase enhanced hair colors.
In two weeks when the game re-emerges go for it, you’ve got nothing to loose. DDO is a premier MMO for everyone either Casual or Elite.
