Katamari Forever has not lost its ability to charm gamers with this edition of the Katamari series. It begins with a level that is good enough to eat. Seen here in the trailer and in the Free Demo on the PSN is the first roll up. It consists of a level that is set up for tea time with sushi and snacks. There are also playthings in this fantasy, like origami birds that transport sweets. You grab Mah Jong tiles that give bonuses and special powers too undoubtedly. The room has place settings for some great food and delicacies that will make you hungry while garnering a bigger ball. When you roll over certain items the screen explodes with little bright pink icons that sing a happy tune and bounce around and dance. Some how this works. There are approximately 30 stages. Its the biggest Katamari universe yet and the first for PS3. It maximizes its artistic flares in high def. and the visual designs are optional. You can choose from three options or a classic look. This is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Once you get started you can’t put it down. It is a terrific party game. Perhaps the more you indulge your vices the more entertaining the game appears, and it seems that might be what the trippy design is for. It’s colorful and the graphics are outstanding. The more stuff you do the more eye candy is thrown up at the screen at you. It’s a visual blimp of happiness that pops all over your living room spilling confetti and party favors. The music s quirky and takes some getting used to. It sticks in your head like a catch anime song. Its strangely pleasant, considering it is made up of random sound effect coo coo clocks samples, and weird singing. In another mode you sprinkle water over the desert and plants and trees grow up. You’ll have to tend this wild jungle of plants. And roll it into a ball as well. All of it leads to more offbeat and weird tasks that are just so oddly fun. It may be that the games succeed so well because they stimulate the same nerve centers as farming, crafting and looting do in MMORPG games. That satisfying feeling of acquistion accomanies many addicting games and Katamari Forever is certainly addictive material. I had to stop myself from playing it long enough to write the review. I give Katamari Forever 9 jumbo fried shrimp out of 10.
