Tekken 6 has a bevy of beautiful fighting female avatars. There are about a dozen women in the game, give or take a trannie, and a sexualized log. Alisa, Anna Williams, Asuka Kazama, Christie Montero, ‘Dragundy’ (drag undies?), Julia Chang, Lili, Mokujin, Nina Williams, Xiadyu Ling, and Zafina make up the girls team in this long time favorite fighter. While the female fighting avatars lack the physical beauty, flexibility and fluidity of the ones in Soul Calibur 4, they definitely provide plenty of fun hours of game-play. There could have been several more females to play as since they are still out numbered by those with a male appearance. The clothing and shoes for the female avatars have more detail this time than in other versions of the game. Tekken 6 does this well by having a back story for each character including relationships to other avatars, and giving them the appropriate clothing.
The breast physics does not appear to be over bouncy on most of the characters. The outfits tend to run skimpier the more you play a character. You get three main
looks for each one of them. Some outfits merely have a color change, and others get gradually sluttier. Nina Williams has a G-string and chaps rig on that doesn’t look like it would stand up to real gravity and motion.
Overall there are some very nice outfits and shoes. There are Elizabeth and James knock offs and the girls are rocking what could be their Louboutins. For some reason shoes on females are always a big challenge for game designers. Either they look like gigantic ugly boots, or they are nothing more than a few polygons that tend to disappear into the textures. Few do them well. In Tekken 6 the shoes appear to be more detailed than they usually are.
But what doesn’t make sense are the foot strikes that are done with open toed heels or sandals. Many of those kicks would be executed differently depending on the foot wear. With Christie Montero, were she a real woman her toe up kicks would break her foot. Heel strikes and hammer kicks would most likely be feasible with that type of shoe. My suggestion would be for designers to watch more female martial arts movies and notice the way women accommodate their style to the footwear.
You can select a main character like Anna Williams who starts out in a long Chinese dress, with lace stockings and pumps. Anna Williams quotes Nietzsche and kicks ass in her garters leopard jacket and black mini in Arcade mode. In her slashed black top and heels the fire effects for her special attacks look great.
Alisa wears what looks like a German beer fest inspired outfit. Her wings and the naughty pantaloons are adorable. While playing her I noticed especially that I don’t like the way that the movement still works in this game. It is too retro for this day and age. She sort of inches along towards the enemy. It would be better if there was a simple control so that they would just run, and not stick to the side scrolling annoynace from the past decade.
Christie Montero is a Capoeira fighter. Her timing is more like dance moves than fighting. Her strikes are exotic looking. When you mash a button expecting a simple kick or punch, she tends to pop off something like a head stand and wraps her ankles around the enemies throat. She’s a powerful character, even though her unique fight style takes some getting used to. She also is difficult in a line up when most of the other characters have similar moves to one and other mapped to the control buttons. There’s a learning curve to mastering playing with Christie, but it is certainly worth it. And she has her pants on.
Julia Chang is also fully clothed. In previous versions of the game Julia was given more of a Native American flare. She seems to be more homogenized this time around. Julia isn’t offering prayers to Great Spirit quite like she used to. She is good to fight with as well and is a strong no nonsense character.
Lili is another story. Like a magical girl from any garden variety anime, Lili ratiates sex, death and jail bait. Her moves are overt and you won’t waste time
finding her good hits with finger twisting combos. She’s hot in every sense of the word. She’s a sweet female avatar that delivers on every level. You can play with her outfits and take her shopping if you wish. Lili is a lovely doll to play fight with, my, my.
This being a Japanese creation, you would expect something a little weird. It comes in the form of Mokujin who is a sentient wooden training dummy. The female shaped target made from a 2,000-year-old oak tree has huge knockers. The story is that when “sensing a lurking evil, Mokujin has awakened once again to save the world.” Oh – kay… If that isn’t strange enough there is a male kangaroo with a boxing baby roo in its pouch. Gender confused yet?
Ling Xiadyu is pretty good as an acrobatic fighter. She reminds me of Jun of old school fighting games past. But she really doesn’t fly and pound down the death like Talim from Soul Calibur 4. Zapfina is probably the worst example of unrealistic female character movement in the game. She certainly wasn’t motion captured from any living person. Her spider-like legs make a very irritating main kick that goes around behind her back and connects with only the tip of her toe. It can be effective, but it looks so unrealistic that it seems ridiculous.
Tekken VI is a fine addition to the series. There is tons of stuff to do. The cost of the clothing and upgrades in the game is pretty high so you will have to play it alot not only to get good enough to compete, but also to customize your characters the way that you want them. It’s an easy game to play, and takes some time and effort to master. Anyone can enjoy it. Although the clothing on the females is a bit too tiny for little kids. I give Tekken VI 9 pairs of designer shoes out of 10.
