Bayonetta PS3 Review

Category: Game Reviews, PS3 | Comments Off

Bayonetta is a game about a so called witch. I had to investigate the game because of prolific use of the word ‘witch’ throughout the game. Sorceress would be a more appropriate word since Bayonetta has nothing to do with the Wiccan religion. The tall  imposing female avatar resembles several anime characters.  Though her long deadly hair can be found in so many anime and Asian martial arts films,  her look is unique to a video game offered in the US. She has guns in her shoes, gets nude when she transforms, and purple butterflies come out of her when she jumps. They didn’t have to make it quite so purple to make it purple. None the less, we have our first appearance of a playable female avatar worth mention for 2010.
The game’s Japanese sensibility likely comes from the director Hideki Kamiya, who also created Devil May Cry. It borrows heavily from several manga and anime such as xxxHolic, Bayonetta is very much like Yuuko-san and the spider demon woman that appears in xxxHolic Kai. Bayonetta has a decent amount of weapons such as the guns, swords, axes, hammers, whips, pole arms, claws ice skates or a launcher. Then she can carry one on both hands and shoes. She also has her big ‘bankai’ move using her hair. The hair is supposed to be making up her skin tight costume. She gets naked enough to tease. I would have preferred if they had more than one animation of the strip show. Some showing a little more, some a little less to keep it interesting.
Witch Time enables Bayonetta to defend herself by warping time, just like Yuuko-san from xxxHolic is a Time Space Witch. Witch Walk helps her scale walls. Bayonetta often can be found at battle with huge enemies God of War style. The level design is certainly more interesting than most games. Even though you have the usual categories of environments they are all over the top. She is riding rockets, surfing and flipping through a wildly colorful vivid world. It is a long way away from all the boring monotone stuff that we’ve seen lately.
Like Yukko-san Bayonetta can travel to multiple realities. There are lots of hidden portals to unlock everything, new weapons, techniques and accessories can be found if you are diligent enough.
The PlayStation 3 version has been reported to have frame rate and loading issues but I didn’t see that when I played it. Bayonetta’s camera can be frustrating. I’d prefer if it was more manually adjustable so that you could control it yourself better.
The game is funny, unusual and it has a very nasty female avatar. The design may not be to your taste, but it isn’t so  girly that guys won’t enjoy it. There is plenty of action and naughty bits for anyone. This game is not for kids though. I give Bayonetta 8 purple butterflies out of 10.
